Just like with the various Spider-Man games, half the fun of Marvel’s Wolverine is getting to pick from literally dozens of different costume choices as you hack and claw your way across the Marvel Universe. Insomniac has clearly done its homework, as they’ve crammed in plenty of suits inspired by classic Marvel Comics storylines, and even some from the various X-Men cartoons and movies. All that, plus they found room to include a few original designs, to boot.

As we count down the final days until Marvel’s Wolverine hits the PS5, let’s explore every costume confirmed to appear in the game and how it pays homage to the source material.

The Battle Reborn Suit

Much like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Wolverine focuses on a core costume that, while it pays homage to the comics, also stands as an original creation by the designers at Insomniac. In this case, Insomniac has dubbed Logan’s new suit the “Battle Reborn” costume. It’s clearly based on Wolverine’s classic yellow and blue Tiger Stripe and Astonishing costumes, but it’s also been given a more rugged and functional overhaul. It’s a tool more than a visual statement, befitting a universe where the X-Men as we know them don’t yet exist.

The Civilian Clothes

The game features a number of suits where Wolverine trades in his bright yellow spandex for more ordinary civilian clothes. None of these are necessarily a 1:1 copy of any specific comic book look, but all speak to Logan’s particular fashion sense – cowboy hats, leather jackets, tank tops, and so forth.

The Ablation Armor

This armored suit is inspired by the one Logan wore in the 2013 Wolverine comic. At the time, his healing factor had been shorted out, forcing him to rely on a flexible yet impervious costume with its own built-in set of claws.

Age of Apocalypse

1995’s Age of Apocalypse crossover introduced an alternate Marvel timeline where Professor Xavier was killed as a young man and Apocalypse awoke early, ushering in a new dystopian era. Like his fellow X-Men, Wolverine is a dramatically different person in this reality, reflected by his red and blue costume and the fact that he’s missing his left hand (the claws remain, though).

Astonishing X-Men

2004’s Astonishing X-Men #1 ended the X-Men’s flirtation with black leather costumes and brought back the spandex look. Artist John Cassaday redesigned Logan’s classic Tiger Stripe costume for a new era, playing around with the shapes and establishing a new look that would remain the gold standard for the next 10 years.

The Brown Costume

If any comic book outfit can rival the Tiger Stripe costume as Logan’s most iconic look, it’s this one. It was introduced way back in 1980’s Uncanny X-Men #139 and stuck around for the next decade. The Brown Costume has inspired many suits that have followed, and Wolverine still returns to this look every now and again.

The Deadpool & Wolverine Suit

2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine not only marked the official MCU debut of both characters, it was also the first time Hugh Jackman was seen wearing a truly comics-accurate costume with a mask. This MCU suit is heavily inspired by the Astonishing X-Men costume from the comics, though it introduced a pair of sleeves for good measure (at least until they were ripped away in the climax of the film).

Fang

Uncanny X-Men #107 marked one of the first times Wolverine was given a drastic visual makeover in the comics. After his standard costume was damaged in battle, Logan stole an orange and red suit worn by a Shi’ar Imperial Guardian known as Fang. It was a taste of what was to come with his beloved brown costume.

Marvel Tokon

Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t the only new game to feature the Ol’ Canucklehead this year. He’s also a playable character in the fighting game Marvel Tokon. That costume, with its bold, cel-shaded style and bombastic take on the Astonishing X-Men design, has been ported over to Marvel’s Wolverine.

New X-Men

With 2000’s X-Men movie revitalizing interest in the franchise, Marvel Comics responded by ditching the X-Men’s classic spandex costumes and outfitting them in more functional black leather outfits. With these Frank Quitely-designed costumes, the yellow X logo became a form of branding, every bit as potent as a Nike swoosh symbol.

Old Man Logan

2009’s Old Man Logan storyline introduced a futuristic version of the Marvel Universe where the world’s villains banded together to finally defeat their enemies. Wolverine, now an aging, disgraced farmer with a family to protect, abandoned his classic costume for a more Wild West-inspired getup. The game adapts that look, specifically the version with the full trenchcoat.

The Original Costume

Wolverine made his debut as a Hulk villain in 1974’s The Incredible Hulk #181 before quickly going on to become a star in the pages of Uncanny X-Men. Artist John Romita, Sr.’s original costume design isn’t that far off from the classic Tiger Stripe look that would become so iconic, but a few details were different. Most notably, this early design featured unusual whiskers on the mask.

The Stealth Costume

Marvel celebrated Wolverine’s first ongoing solo comic in 1988 with the debut of a drastically different costume. This stealthy number ditched all the color in favor of an all-black approach. Even black face paint was used to help mask Logan’s identity during his time in Madripoor.

Team X

Long before he was a member of the X-Men, Logan served on a black ops mutant strikeforce known as Team X. That backstory looks to play a key role in the game, so it’s only fitting that Marvel’s Wolverine would include this memorable costume. Just as in the comics, it combines a functional black bodysuit with plenty of bold yellow padding.

Ultimate Winter Soldier

Marvel’s second incarnation of the Ultimate Universe is one where a villain known as The Maker systematically interfered with the origins of countless heroes, creating a world very different from the Marvel Universe we know and love. Here, Logan is the Winter Soldier, a Russian super-soldier who sports an unusual costume marked by a large red star and a full face mask.

The Unified Costume

In the early ’00s, Marvel went through a period where they wanted Wolverine to have the same look across all media. The result was this “Unified Costume,” a more muted black suit with yellow tiger stripes on the shoulders. This look appeared in both the regular Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe, as well as in the animated series X-Men Evolution.

Weapon X

No costume lineup would be complete without Wolverine’s Weapon X look. This is how he looked when he was captured by Weapon X and subjected to the adamantium bonding process, complete with copious amounts of tubes and wires and a bulky VR helmet.

The Xavier School Uniform

During Jim Lee’s beloved tenure on Uncanny X-Men, the team went through a brief phase where every X-Man wore the same blue and yellow costume. Logan was no exception. This matchy-matchy look didn’t last long, though Banshee would continue to wear his school uniform for a couple of years.

X-Force

Following the events of 2008’s Messiah Complex crossover, Cyclops reformed X-Force as a deadly black ops squad tasked with defending the dwindling mutant race by any means necessary. Wolverine and his teammates all donned new variations on their traditional unifroms, one where all the color was replaced by stealthy blacks and greys.

X-Men ’97

It seems that Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t including a traditional version of Logan’s iconic Tiger Stripe costume (though we have to assume it’s coming eventually). For now, the closest option is this version, which pairs that beloved costume with the animated aesthetic of X-Men ’97. You’ll just have to deal with not hearing Cal Dodd’s voice coming out of this character’s mouth.

Insomniac’s Original Costumes

Like with the Spider-Man games, Insomniac’s designers have come up with a couple of original designs for Logan to wear in the game. One is a bold black and yellow striped suit, and the other is an armored costume with a distinctive black and blue color scheme. We can only assume more original designs will be added to the game over time.
