Magic: The Gathering is kicking off a new Marvel-themed set focused on heroes and villains this month, and IGN has the exclusive first look at Winter Soldier, Icy Assassin.
The card, which is a new Rare from the set, showcases legendary assassin, Bucky Barnes, with awesome artwork from Riccardo Federici and Todd Nauck. Here’s all you need to know.
Stay Frosty
Winter Soldier, Icy Assassin is an Orzhov (black/white) legendary human assassin villain that has Vigilance and Menace which are befitting of his aggressive nature.
He starts off as a 2/2, but gains +2/+0 for equipment attached to him. Load him up with a bunch of weaponry and tools, and he could become a powerhouse — albeit one with the Achilles heel of staying at base toughness.
Still, if Winter Soldier, Icy Assassin is sent to the graveyard, you can bring him back for five mana and instantly attach an equipment to him. To balance that, a finality counter means he’ll be exiled next time he does.
The base version (number 0239) shows Winter Soldier perched atop a roof with his metallic arm holding a knife, looking like the most emo assassin around, thanks to Riccardo Federici’s awesome art.
The logo treatment (new for this set and seemingly inspired by the Final Fantasy set’s borderless character cards) has a more comic-style look, drawn by legendary artist Todd Nauck. It’s number 377 in the set.
